Trademark Protection through European Union Enlargement

As of 1 May 2004 the following 10 countries will be member states of the European Union:

  • Estonia (EE), Lithuania (LT), Latvia (LV)

  • Czech Republik (CZ), Slovak Republik (SK)

  • Slovenia (SI), Hungary (HU), Poland (PL)
  • Malta (MT), Cyprus (CY)


  • If you are interested in protecting your trademarks in these countries, it is advisable to act now.

    European Community trademarks filed before 1 November 2003 will be valid on the territory of the accessor states from 1 May 2004, however, no opposition may be lodged against such a community trademark on the basis of a national trademark in any of the accessor states.

    The official fee for filing a European Community trademark in up to 3 classes of services/goods is only 975,00 EUR.
